Maundy Thursday 2021

Mexborough Baptist Church           Thursday 1st April 2021

BIG BEN PRAYER at 12 noon, 29 March - 3 April 2021

All through this hour,
Lord, be my guide,
That by thy power
No foot shall slide.

Our Holy Week reflection for today, Maundy Thursday, is led by Jane and David Horne of Cwmbran Salvation Army, and is entitled 'Waiting'click on the link

Please read John 13:1-17; John 13:34-35

Lord God, you sent your Son into the world, and before His hour had come, He washed his disciples’ feet.
You had given all things into His hands. He had come from you, and was going to you, and what did he do?
He knelt down on the floor, and washed His friends’ feet.
He was their teacher and their Lord, yet he washed their feet.
Lord God, help us learn from his example; help us to do as he has done for us.
The world will know we are his disciples if we love one another. Strengthen our hands and our wills for love and for service.
Keep before our eyes the image of your Son, who, being God, became a Servant for our sake.
All glory be to him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
Rachel Marie Stone

Please continue to pray for Keith, those on our updates, all those who can come out of shielding today and that the easing of lockdown will enable us all, including our young families, to enjoy Easter. Amen.

We close this part of our reflection with the song 'Lord I Come (Wash my feet)' by David Brackenbury click on the link

We suggest that we pause here and then come back at 7.00 p.m. to reflect some more on the Last Supper and to take communion together.  Please have your Bible and bread and wine (or juice) ready.  If you are sharing this act of worship as a family, it is up to you as parents to decide whether your children may share in the bread and wine/juice.

The Last Supper

Read Luke 22:7-23

Jesus knew that His time had come.  He was about to die humiliated and in agony in a terrible, lonely ordeal on the cross.  Before that he wanted to share a last meal with his disciples, his friends.  It was a significant meal, remembering and celebrating the salvation of the Israelites from Egypt.  Jesus adds much more significance to it, by taking two elements of that meal and making them symbols of salvation for all people everywhere.  Bread represents his body, broken on the cross, and wine represents his blood, poured out as a sacrifice atoning for all the sin of the world, all the sin of each one of us.  When we take communion we become one with Jesus and all the family of believers around the world, the Church.

This song reminds us that Jesus went through all this because he loves us so much - "Here is love, vast as the ocean" Click on the link

When the hour came, Jesus and His apostles reclined at the table. And He said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfilment in the kingdom of God.” After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, "Take this and divide it among you. For I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.

Let us pause and bring our own thoughts and quiet confession to God.

The Lord's Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
for thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen.

Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”
Eat the bread reflecting on the sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ.  He did this for each and every one of us and we are thankful.

In the same way, after the supper He took the cup saying, “This is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.”
Drink the wine reflecting on the blood that was poured out in love for you.

Pause and bring your own thanksgiving to God in prayer.

Whatever our reflections and experiences have been today, whatever our joys and problems, may we always remember what Jesus has done for us in in his life and death, resurrection and ascension - 'Man of Sorrows' click on the link

God Bless you.   Denise.
